Rite of Eucharistic Exposition and Benediction

Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament

Stand: The altar server enters the chapel, followed by the presider carrying the Luna with the Host. We begin to sing a selected song relating to the liturgical season or the mystery of the Eucharist.

Kneel: While the presider places the Luna with the Host into the monstrance on the altar.

Once the presider has reached the front of the altar and kneels, he will lead all in singing the Salutaris or some other appropriate Eucharistic song.

O Saving Victim

O saving Victim, op'ning wide
The gate of heav'n to man below,
Our foes press on from ev'ry side;
Thine aid supply, thy strength bestow.

To thy great name be endless praise,
Immortal Godhead, One in three.
Oh, grant us endless length of days
In our true native land with thee. (Amen.)

O salutaris Hostia
Quae coeli pandis ostium:
Bella premunt hostilia,
Da robur, fer auxilium

Uni trinoque Domino
Sit sempiterna gloria,
Qui vitam sine termino
Nobis donet in patria. (Amen.)

Stand or be Seated: After the presider has incensed the monstrance, he will wait a few minutes before standing and walking to the ambo to start the reading(s). If the Gospel is to be proclaimed, the presider will instruct all to stand. Otherwise, all will remain seated during the nonGospel scripture reading(s). This is followed by a short reflection applicable to the reading and the quiet time of adoration.

Adoration

Kneel or be Seated: After the reading(s) are completed, the presider and altar server(s) will go to their assigned seating to start their private portion(s) of the adoration/devotion.

Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament

Kneel: Once the individual, private adoration/devotion is completed for the hour, the presider and altar server will return to the front of the altar. While the presider incenses the monstrance, all sing the Tantum Ergo (or another appropriate Eucharistic song):

Tantum Ergo

Down in adoration falling
Lo, the sacred host we hail;
Lo, o'er ancient forms departing,
Newer rites of grace prevail;
Faith for all defects supplying,
Where the feeble senses fail.

To the everlasting Father,
And the Son who reigns on high,
With the Spirit blest proceeding
Forth from each eternally,
Be salvation, honor, blessing,
Might, and endless majesty. (Amen.)

Tantum ergo Sancramentum
Veneremur cernui:
Et antiquum documentum
Novo cedat ritui
Praestet fides supplementum
Sensuum defectui.

Genitori, Genitoque
Laus et jubilatio
Salus, honor, virtus quoque
Sit et benedicto:
Procedenti ab utroque
Compar sit laudatio. (Amen.)

All remain kneeling when the Presider says, “Let us pray”:

Lord our God, you have given us the True Bread from Heaven. In the strength of this food may we live always by your life and rise in glory on the last day. We ask this through Christ our Lord. (Amen.)

or

Lord Jesus Christ, you gave us the Eucharist as the memorial of your suffering and death. May our worship of this sacrament of your body and blood help us to experience the salvation you won for us and the peace of the kingdom where you live with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. (Amen.)

or

Lord our God, in this great sacrament, we come into the presence of Jesus Christ, your Son. Born of the Virgin Mary and crucified for our salvation. May we who declare our faith in this fountain of love and mercy Drink from it the water of everlasting life. We ask this through Christ our Lord. (Amen.)

(or another appropriate prayer may be used)

All remain kneeling while the Presider elevates the monstrance and as all gathered then recite the Divine Praises.

The Divine Praises

Blessed be God.
Blessed be his Holy Name.
Blessed be Jesus Christ, true God and true Man.
Blessed be the Name of Jesus.
Blessed be his most Sacred Heart.
Blessed be his most Precious Blood.
Blessed be Jesus in the most Holy Sacrament of the Altar.
Blessed be the Holy Spirit, the Paraclete.
Blessed be the great Mother of God, Mary most holy.
Blessed be her holy and Immaculate Conception.
Blessed be her glorious Assumption.
Blessed be the name of Mary, virgin and mother.
Blessed be St. Joseph, her most chaste spouse.
Blessed be God in his Angels and in his Saints. (Amen.)

Reposition of the Blessed Sacrament

All stand and sing: Holy God We Praise Thy Name (or another appropriate hymn)

Holy God, we praise thy name,
Lord of all, we bow before thee!
All on earth thy sceptre claim,
All in heaven above adore thee.
Infinite they vast domain,
Everlasting is thy reign.
Infinite thy vast domain,
Everlasting is thy reign.

Hark the loud celestial hymn
Angel choirs above are raising!
Cherubim and Seraphim in unceasing chorus praising
Fill the heavens with sweet accord
Holy, holy, holy Lord.
Fill the heavens with sweet accord
Holy, holy, holy Lord.
